Asian Beauty

Black and white charcoal on gray toned paper. This artwork was inspired from the work of Chen Shu-Fen, a digital artist. I was trying to explore on some other style of art outside the world of caricature that I would like to try it myself, and I stumbled on japanese manga and anime. I think there are a lot of great asian artists out there who are equally good.

The Mistress

Black and white charcoal on gray toned paper. Her being a mistress to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaragoza has nothing to do why I decided to draw her. Her beauty and the light setting was just perfect as my subject. Her name is Mirthala Salinas, which was all over the news when their story broke out. The title "The Mistress" is just a catchy phrase.

The Mayor's Mistress

Colored pencil in Stratmore medium paper. 12 colors is what I have by Loew and Cornell brand and I feel so inadequate and limited. At the early part of process I was already thinking of quitting for the same reason, but nonetheless I continued with persistence. Its frustrating just the same on mixing the colors to get the effect I wanted. I thought of using the brown paper which has more teeth and roughness to hold the pigments, but I ran out of it, so I was stuck of what is at hand. I wasn't really sure of the outcome of this until it was finally finished. Voila! And there it is.

Another version of funny guy George Lopez. Just trying to stretch of what else I can do for a better version, not only for the likeness, but more of the process of light rendering, hatching, shadows, and understanding what it meant. There's this new style that I discovered and I want to retain it by repeatedly practicing it and I was looking at some other avenues on how to max it out.

The Most Infamous Assassin

John Wilkes Booth caricature in black and white charcoal. He's America's most infamous assassin who killed President Abraham Lincoln. He thought that after killing the widely criticized president, he would be doing his countrymen a favor of getting rid of a tyrant. It turned out that he became the most hated villain who cowardly killed an unarmed man by shooting at the man's back. An intelligent man who possesses good looks and charm. He's also a Shakespearean actor.

"Ripper Street"

This is the funny part of the process behind this artwork: looking at the picture at the start of the drawing, I thought the picture I was working on was of Hugh Jackman (X-Men). Honestly, it really look like him so the whole time I was thinking about Hugh Jackman and how to make it look like him. At the end of the drawing I thought of checking the whole cast of that show, Ripper Street. It turned out that I was wrong for the whole time I was trying to make him look like Jackman. The man happen to be Mathew Macfadyen!

Julius Caesar #2

This a caricature of Ciaran Hinds who portrayed the role of the Emperor Julius Caesar in the HBO TV series "Rome". I loved that whole series of 24 episodes, 2 seasons with a twist at the end. It's way better than the other series, The Game of Thrones, which has no interesting story.

Peter Dinklage

I was trying to emulate artist Dave Malan's line drawing. I thought that his lines are so exact, like it's carefully calculated, no smudges, just simple hatches. Yet his drawing looks so superb. The artwork below is my own caricature of Peter Dinklage of the HBO tv series, the "Game of Thrones". It's not even close to Malan's style. If Dave would have done this he might have focused more on the eyes by sharpening the contrast, and probably elaborate more on the hair to give more an interesting look. Yeah... why didn't I think of that?
