Sean

Sean Bean as Boromir in The Lord of the Ring sequels. Caricature in pen 8.25x11 inches, white paper.

Fillin' the gap

Unlike most people, I love to be stuck waiting- that's when I can  do what I want to do- to draw at my leisure time. I was at ER with a family last night and the waiting game was taking forever. Coming unprepared, I didn't have anything to draw so I asked a nurse for a clean sheet of paper and a pen. And the game was on. I was happy and satisfied I was able to do these 3 caricatures until my phone died. I have to wait for the next morning to post this online.
Imagine if I were not able to fill the gap of an empty time.

Sean

Colored pencil. 9x12. Just trying to experiment with colored pencil. I'm not so much of a fan but at least I gave it a try.

Last pitch

I did this last quick sketch late last night before crashing in bed. I would have continued for more but I'm working the next morning.

A Study of a Face

Graphite and white charcoal on toned paper. 11x14 inches.

This is an early morning sketch I did. I have to cram in finishing this up and posted them in instagram even before I could check for some flaws with a fresh eye. Just to get it all done before going to Sunday Mass. Anyway most of my work are done in a hurried way for some other stuff to do other than this passion. I'm used to it.

Tim K

Graphite and white charcoal on toned paper. 11x14. Sketch of Dutch jazz violinist, Tim Kliphuis, famous for his fusion of gypsy jazz with classical and folk music. I think his the reigning jazz great next to  great Stephan Grappelli.

Finn writer, a fine writer

Charcoal portrait of Mark Twain on Fusain paper. 11x18 inches. This type of gridded  paper is a tough one for me. The finest line that you can make appears broken because of the grid, so you are compelled to trust the result and make the best of it. You have to try it yourself to make sense of what I'm talking about.

Loosening up

Caricatures of Glenn in pen. I thought of just being productive in my breaktime at work. While doing this I was thinking of artist Dave Malan crosshatching method. It's not so much that I want to be accurate and careful about it, just a loose drawing. Quickies are like random burps, it feels good everytime you get them.

Glenn

Charcoal on Fusain paper. Another version of Glenn B.

The ones directly at the the bottom looks so bland and lifeless that I have to delay posting it for a day. I didn't know what was lacking and just don't know what I was doing.

At this point I'm still trying to find that spark of life in a portrait. I did like a ton of readjustments on this adding more and more darkness trying to widened that range of values. And this is what I came up with. You'll be the judge.

Glenn

Graphite study portrait of Glenn. As I always do, I wake up crazy early to do some sketches. I gotta have an idea what to do the night before so I won't have to waste time the next day. Next step to this is a charcoal rendition. A study helps me figure out the lights and darks, and how much intensity of values to use.

I used mostly 7B Derwent graphite.

Kiefer 2

Another pastel etude of Kiefer Sutherland.

Soft pastel sticks are more challenging medium than the pencil chalk pastels where with these pencils one could have more precision and control on applying with a pointed tip.

Kiefer

Soft pastel painting on #840 Kraft pad. 9x12 inches. This is a portrait of Kiefer Sutherland, Hollywood actor.

Iron Rob

Soft pastel on #840 Kraft pad. 9x12 inches.
This is one of my rare attemps with colored mediums. I must admit that I'm still new with pastels, and obviously my rendition is not that refined yet. Please bear with me for now.

Etude #4

Graphite in white paper. 9x12 inches. I struggled on this one at the start. And to start all over again even crossed my mind. But I challenged myself by sticking to it, and to be more careful to pull this off to its likeness as close as can be. The result was not remarkable enough but it's not that bad either. The reference? Robert Downey Jr.

Etude #3

A quick sketch of Black Jack in graphite. White paper. 9x12 inches.
I was more after of the likeness of the subject in a shortest time I can and graphite is the best tool for it, because it doesn't smudge as much as the charcoal. For this much of detail I probably did it in 30 to 45 mins.

May etude #2

Charcoal. White paper. 9x12 inches.
I was looking at an artwork by another artist that his rendition of the hair look so simple, not too much detail, everything suggestive, but it look so awesome. And I tried to emulate it, and here's my own version. I think mine is a bit over done but I kept it loose.

Kiefer

Caricature in charcoal. A study of Kiefer Sutherland. I've done a caricature of him back then- a copied artwork from another artist when I was trying to learn how to draw caricature. I've done a lot of copying from different artists, and I thought it's the only way to learn the art. There are a lot of caricaturists out there but the the ones that stands out for me are Jason Seiler and Dominic Philibert. Why? Go check their websites- it's phenomenal.
